The central bank has intervened to prevent the rupiah from a sharp decline, confident the local currency will strengthen again against the US dollar.

"We see this will not continue. The dollar tends to weaken," Bank Indonesia (BI) acting governor Darmin Nasution said Friday.

He said investors sold stocks and BI certificates to buy the dollar as a safe haven because the US economy showed a lower-than-expected recovery.

"BI has done efforts to prevent the rupiah from falling too deep," he added.
